Duets

Listen to these fun duets with my pal Miles – we haven’t polished them, they’re fresh from the studio.

The great Bobby Blue Bland was one of my first musical influences, being one of the early LPs I bought when I joined the Columbia Record Club as a young teenager. I just love the sound of his voice and the  deep emotions he invokes. There are many of his tunes that I'd like to sing, and this is the first one that I've recorded.

I discovered this blues in my very first year at University. It was on an old blues compilation record in the basement of the UBC Library. I wrote down the title and lyrics, but silly me, not the singer's name or composer. I've been doing research trying to find out who the singer was and I think it might be Ida Cox.  She has a tune called One Hour Woman which is on the same theme and her voice tweaks my memory.

If anyone does know the origins of this tune I'd be very grateful to hear about it. I hope you like the Bordello piano sound and dirty guitar that I requested as accompaniment.

Here’s an old blues number from the Bobby Blue Bland — and one of the first LPs I ever bought!

Big Bad Bill

Big Bad Bill' is a tune from my 'Tribute To Peggy Lee' show. I love telling the story of a bad boy reformed by love.

Call Me When You Get There

This is a track from Netflix’s fantastic series, The Eddy, about a jazz club in Paris. The kitchen of the club was turned into a recording studio and the music was all played live on the floor by an amazingly good band, whose musicians also starred in the series!!!

This version of 'Call Me When You Get There' is very different from the original. Miles suggested we try it as a Jazz waltz, which I easily fell into. I think it would really surprise the composers.

The Barfly

This is another one from Netflix’s The Eddy, which shows a modern, grittier version of Paris as a backdrop for a complex murder mystery featuring Black, Arabic, French, American and Eastern European characters.

The music was written by the show's piano player, Randy Kerber, and Glen Ballard (who also cowrote Alanis Morisette's 'Jagged Little Pill', and Michael Jackson's 'Man In The Mirror'). Watching The Eddy and learning all the gorgeous tunes played in this series saved my sanity during the first Covid lockdowns.

Sunny

Sunny, by Bobby Hebb, was a standard in the 60's when you’d hear it everywhere. We’ve updated it here with a little twist.

The power of Love

I heard this great Huey Lewis tune from Back to the Future on TV the other day, and I had a crazy idea to turn it into a Jazz Waltz. I took it to my rehearsal with Miles and said let’s try this. Here’s how it turned out!

Soul kitchen

Miles and I decided to cover this track by The Doors. It was written about a restaurant in San Fransisco that Jim Morrison loved going to. He felt very comfortable there and would often be kicked out at closing time.

I hope you enjoy this ode to soul food and a place that was dear to Jim Morrison.

Señor Blues

This is a great jazz tune sung spectacularly by Anita O’day. Miles and I have a completely new take on it. Have a listen to see what we did.
